There are 4 main different models of the iPad: iPad 2, iPad Mini, iPad Mini with Retain display and the new iPad Air. All of these models have a black and white version, and they come available in both a Cellular and non-Cellular model.
The iPad 2 and iPad Mini are only available in a 16GB model, but the iPad Mini with Retina display and the new iPad Air come in the 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB variations. This adds up to a total of 40 different variations of the Apple iPad for you to choose from.
Differences and Similarities
Now we will break down the different and similar specs between the models to help you better understand what is inside each iPad. Both the iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retain display use the new A7 quad-core chip giving them better performance over the older iPad Mini and iPad 2 models.
All the iPads can last up to 10 hours on a full charge; however, the older iPad 2 uses the old 30-pin connector while the other models use the new lightning port. The new iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retain display use retina display technology which doubles the screen resolution therefore giving better visual clarity and quality. The older iPad 2 also has a slightly worse camera and it can only record 720p HD video, while the newer models can record 1080p HD video.
Which One is Right For Me?
To help you select the right iPad, try this quick checklist.
- Do you need your iPad to have internet/cellular access away from your home? If you said yes, then you should purchase the cellular version of the iPad which allows you to use 3G and/or 4G network SIM to enable internet access away from your home/office.
- Do you need something that is extremely portable? If you said yes, then you should look at the iPad Mini and iPad Mini with Retain display. Apple iPads are generally portable; however, the iPad Mini is incredibly lightweight and small, making it super portable and convenient. The new iPad Air also looks extremely portable; however, due to the larger screen size it can still be an inconvenience to carry around.
- Do you need that extra storage space? If you answered no, then you can buy the 16GB version, but if you need a lot of storage space then you will need to buy one of the more expensive models.
